The Hike Is Over. The Drive Home Is Part of the Plan.

The trailhead is a much nicer finish line when your ride home is already set up.

Leave a small return kit

Keep a change of footwear, a spare layer, and a bag for dirty gear ready for your return. Choose storage that suits the weather and the items. Do not leave temperature-sensitive products in a hot vehicle.

Make room for the dirty things

Put muddy boots in a designated tray or bag rather than next to clean clothes. Keep a towel handy for the seat or your gear. This is a packing decision, not a reason to bring half the house to the trailhead.

Allow time for the transition

Include time to change and put the pack away when estimating your arrival home. It is easier to leave calmly when your schedule does not assume the drive begins the second you step off the trail. Keep anything you need during the drive within reach before setting off.
